How Common is Cheating in Online Exams and did it Increase During the COVID-19 Pandemic? A Systematic Review

Abstract Academic misconduct is a threat to the validity and reliability of online examinations, media reports suggest that spiked dramatically in higher education during emergency shift exams caused by COVID-19 pandemic. This study reviewed survey research determine how common it for university students admit cheating exams, why they do it. We also assessed whether these self-reports increased pandemic, along with an evaluation quality evidence which addressed questions. 25 samples were identified from 19 Studies, including 4672 participants, going back 2012. Online exam was self-reported substantial minority (44.7%) total. Pre-COVID this 29.9%, but COVID jumped 54.7%, although more heterogenous. Individual than group cheating, most reason reported simply there opportunity so. Remote proctoring appeared reduce occurrence data limited. However number methodological features confidence accuracy all findings. Most collected using designs makes likely under-reported, example convenience sampling, modest sample size insufficient information calculate response rate. No studies considered representative their population. Future approaches should consider basic examinations can be maintained, considering numbers who appear willing engaging misconduct. on academic would benefit large samples, guaranteeing participants anonymity.
